Simply using a switched power source, especially one that is hot in the ACC position, can cause the choke to open prematurely if the key is on but the engine is not running. GM used two different methods, depending on the vehicle. Most used an oil pressure switch in the power line to the choke. This way, the choke doesn’t start to heat up until the engine is running and there is oil pressure. I ran a fused wire 20 A fuse from the BATT terminal on the alternator to the switch, and from the switch to the choke. Very simple to wire and very clean. The middle terminal works the OIL light, the other two are a normally open switch that closes with oil pressure. Use these to control the choke. If you have an oil pressure gauge instead of a light, simply use a brass tee fitting to connect both this switch and your oil pressure sender. The other way is to use a relay that is triggered by the field wire on the alternator brown 1 wire on SI-family alternators, for example.

Report galtiero answered 3 years ago Just went through this with a sierra 5. Even though the truck had extremely low mileage and oil changes were routinely done sediment had built up in the engine. I would not count on it being a faulty sending unit. I had a long weekend and pulled the motor and tore it down and rebuilt it. I was shocked that this engine with only 79k on it looked worse than any engine I have ever torn down. You have to love modern technology and lubricants.
I did try the kerosene trick used it frequently in the 80’s when dealing with barn find type vehicles that had not been run in years it sis me no good, I also tried raising the motor just enough to drop the oil pan and clean the sediment out of the pan but neither worked because the block is higher in the engine. The only thing I did not try was to completely and I do mean completely fill the motor with K-1 and let it sit for a few days than drain and repeat.
I did this with some vehicles in the 70’s and 80’s that had extreme varnishing but I am not sure I would try that with a modern engine. Also keep in mind that every time you put a high detergent product in the engine you run the risk of having a large piece of scale dislodge and be to large and hardened to be broken down causing it to become an even worse blockage than you started with. If you want to keep the engine have it torn down and fixed right or it will nickel and dime you to death.

The pcm does not turn off fuel pump relay while engine is running. To prove it does not and that oil pressure switch is not a fuel pump cut off switch while engine is running unplug oil pressure switch.
Or just unplug if before starting engine. Or check pcm fuel pump relay request while engine is running. On pcm pin B Mitchell on demand lables it electric fuel pump in and shows it running to fuel pump power between fuse and pump. Oil pump pressure switch would no affect voltage on that wire or give a spike when switching on or off.

The stand needs to be high enough so that the legs of your engine hoist will roll below. At one end, I welded on two uprights. This is for mounting the radiator and control panel.
