December 5, I have been listening to a podcast by York University professor Philip Harland and have been enjoying it. One of the things that he says, that I hear from many scholars, continues to bother me. This has to do with the late dating of the Gospels. Harland dates the Gospel of Matthew to AD. There are a variety of reasons for that. Like most scholars, Harland agrees that Mark is the earliest Gospel.
Since critical scholars have trouble believing in real prophecy, they assume Mark wrote this after, as it was happening or just before the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. Often they grudgingly give Mark a date of around 68, so that the destruction might not have quite happened but yet is close enough that the writing was on the wall.
Why Shouldn’t We Trust the Non

In my mind, that is an argument from silence. To me it would be like saying that because a book describing Pacific naval battles of World War II does not mention the Normandy landing, it must not have happened. The goal of Acts was not to provide a comprehensive history of the middle east of the time, but rather describe the acts of the apostles, so they were not writing about things that happened later. I thought it was humorous because the very same book tries to argue away differences in the gospels by saying the respective author had a particular goal in his writing.
So that applies for the difference in the gosples, but not for an account of the destruction of the temple. Acts is also silent as to the deaths of the main characters: Arguments from silence can cut in any number of ways. Bible apologetics and education
While they were written too late to be legitimate eyewitness accounts, they were built on the core truths of Gospels albeit altered and embellished by authors with specific motivations. There are good reasons to reject these texts , but there is much we can learn about Jesus as well. We do, however, have a few fragments and evidence from letters written by Clement of Alexandria AD and Origen AD that quote the Preaching of Peter in several places.
